Why the Odyssey and the Story of the Return Home Still Matter by Caroline Grable ‘25

About

The Odyssey narrates the timeless tale of Odysseus’s return home from the Trojan War and the struggles of his loved ones coping with his disappearance. After reading, translating, and studying Homer’s tales in my Greek and Latin class, the story’s strong applicability to our lives continues throughout time. The ancient Greeks dealt with the same humanity as us, and the Homeric tradition reminds its audience how similar people are even across thousands of years. Not only does it shape storytelling, but the Odyssey and its core account of a journey homeward withstands time as it delves into universal themes of perseverance, love, kindness, and human mistakes.
