HIPPOCRATES’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO MODERN MEDICINE by Caroline Fung ‘27

Abstract:

Today, the field of medicine deals with maintaining and restoring health through diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and research with numerous specialties and subspecialties. This paper focuses on how medicine has developed into this multifaceted field of study it is in the modern world by looking back 2400 years. Specifically, it will analyze the contributions of Greek philosopher and physician Hippocrates and how they laid the foundation for modern medicine. Hippocrates changed medicine into a rational practice, founded evidence-based medicine, introduced medical ethics, and practiced patient-centered medicine. While some of his theories have been disproven, his developments helped medicine evolve into the complex area of study it is today and will continue to affect the development of medicine in the future.
