THE BRITISH COLONIZATION IMPACT ON INDIA THROUGH THE EAST INDIA COMPANY by Jill Patel ‘27

Abstract:

This research paper explores the political, economic, and social effects of the British colonization of India on Indian citizens. The paper argues that although the East India Company left a positive long-term impact, Indians felt threatened, angry, and exploited under British rule. Primary sources, such as peer-reviewed journals and books, and secondary sources, such as database articles, were analyzed to determine British actions and their impact on Indian life. Research shows that by establishing itself as the dominant political power, the East India Company took advantage of the thriving trade system in India to gain economic control, which contributed to the economic collapse, while also pressuring Indians to adopt Christianity and other aspects of British culture. While Indian’s were mistreated under British rule, their reforms passed during this time allowed Indian life, politics, and economy to flourish after their independence.
