Abstract:
Empress Wu Zetian's reign marked a transformative era in the Tang dynasty. After her unexpected rise to power, she stabilized and reformed the government, improved the status of women in society, and fostered cultural, religious, and economic development within the Tang dynasty. However, Empress Wu attained these achievements using brutal and tyrannical tactics, marring her reputation for historians and beyond. Regardless, her accomplishments as China’s first and most influential female emperor have been revolutionary to the Tang dynasty and its neighbors.
