THE REFLECTION OF ASIAN CULTURE ON LOCAL FOLKTALES by Tram Anh Nguyen ‘27
Abstract:
The tradition of storytelling has often been used to preserve and propagate a society’s beliefs and values. From infamous protagonists to obscure yokai, each character used in culturally significant stories like folktales and myths is full of symbolism representing the ideals held by the society in which they originated. However, these beliefs can sometimes be unfair or detrimental, so those stories often ended up spreading beliefs that caused more harm than good. This paper will dissect and analyze various folktales and folkloric characters from Asia to see what they can say about the societies they came from. It is by looking through the past and learning from old mistakes that the people of today can learn to be better, more upright people.
